Johannes Postlmayr

The importance of vessels throughout human history, as containers for matters of high significance, plays a vital role in Johannes Postlmayr’s artistic process. In his work “the milk cartons” he is exploring form and sculptural impact by shifting the materiality of an iconic single use packaging item.

Johannes Postlmayr identifies as metal·gestalter. By using the German terminology “Gestalter” he is occupying the intersection of art and design, between craft and technology. Through his background as a trained blacksmith and metal worker, his practice roots deeply in materiality and the appreciation for the handmade. This foundation of material knowledge may not be considered as a limitation to his artistic process, because it includes innovation, experimentation and the pushing of boundaries.
