The Project "Memorial Sign"

Cemetery culture - a reflection of our Society

Cemeteries are places of communal rememberance. How we take care of our departed is also a reference to our social conditions. The dignity of mankind does not end with death. The cemetery is a reflection of how mobility has changed our society, and reveals the loss of rituals. It demonstrates individualization and trends towards anonymity. Ultimately, the cemetery is a mirror of society because it demonstrates cultural differences.

Gothenburg University Campus Steneby Metal Art runs in cooperation with Håjum´s Graveyard in Trollhättan a project to reformulate what a memorial sign can be. In this course the students get challenged to investigate how we mourn and say good-bye to beloved people. Finding new rituals and visual forms that enables space for mourning. Here you can see work, that have been made over the past years. Find the link to the education here.
